Greenhouse gas inventory and reporting
The business case for disclosure on greenhouse gas emissions is overwhelming for many organisations. An increasing number of organisations are covered by the National Greenhouse andEnergyReporting Scheme (NGERS) and/or State government regulations.
Controlling corporations must report under NGERS if they reach the following thresholds for greenhouse gas emissions (kt) or energy consumption (TJ):
| 2008/09 reporting year | 2009/10 reporting year | 2010/11 reporting year | 2011/12 reporting year | ||||||||||||||||
| Corporate Group threshold | 125kt 500TJ |
87.5kt 350TJ |
50kt 200TJ |
||||||||||||||||
| Facility threshold | 25kt 100TJ |
||||||||||||||||||

The NGERS legislation is expected to be amended to take in the additional entities that are not currently covered by NGERS, but which would be included under the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.
Other important drivers include stakeholder expectations, particularly from the investment community, and the need to maintain corporate reputation and credibility.
Many different frameworks have been developed for greenhouse gas reporting and there is a diversity of greenhouse intensity and other indicators in use.
The Middle Way is experienced in greenhouse gas reporting following recognised protocols and guidelines including NGERS; the Greenhouse Gas Protocol of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute; ISO 14064 and ISO 14065; and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines for Sustainability Reporting.
